The first Ford-Ferguson tractor was the Ford 9N. The Ford 9N
tractor was first first seen in 1939. A simple tractor, the Ford 9N was
fitted with the Ferguson system three-point hitch, a three-speed
transmission, and featured foot pegs instead of running boards. The 9N's
relatively tall and wide-spaced front wheel design resulted in sluggish
steering and reduced maneuverability. The Ford 9N exhaust was routed
underneath the tractor, much like an automobile. All Ford 9N tractors
were painted Ford dark grey. This tractor has a rear Power Take Off
(PTO) which could be used to drive three point or towed implements. The
Ford 9N tractor was relaunched as the Ford 2N tractor in late 1941.
The Ford 2N tractor also shone Ford dark grey. The Ford 2N tractor, and
the Ford 9N tractor both had 3-speed Ford N-series transmissions. All
of the Ford 9N and Ford 2N tractors have front-mounted distributor,
which proved difficult to service. Manufacturing of the Ford *8N*
tractors began in 1947. Complete with the Ferguson System three-point
hitch and 4-speed transmission, the Ford 8n tractor was a very complete
tractor. The Ford 8N tractor has a 4-speed transmission instead of a
3-speed in the Ford 2N and Ford 9N, and has more horsepower.
